We’ve had a very busy few days.
Saturday was Pikey’s birthday – SIXTY SIX!!!! Pikey says thank you to all those who sent cards or good wishes.
We went out to lunch with Elinor, Phil and Adam to the Lunesdale Arms for lunch. It was very enjoyable as this picture of Adam shows. His ability to spread chocolate yoghurt about kept the restaurant in stitches.
On Monday we went to Barrow to see Tony Macheta the haematologist. He said that the certain protein levels in her blood, indicators of increasing incidence of myeloma, were starting to creep up again and that it was time to take action before it got any worse.
So we had to go back there on Thursday to start a new course of one of the latest drugs, Revlimid. It was licensed by NICE in 2009. Its generic name is lenalidomide, which Tony Macheta calls the “son of thalidomide”. Pikey had that before and tolerated it quite well. He thinks that if she tolerates Revlimid well she could well be on it long term. The web site says “The medicine is designed to keep multiple myeloma, which is incurable, under control”. It doesn’t seem to have many nasty side effects. We’ll see. Watch this space. First dose last night and nothing nasty today. Pikey now takes 44 pills per day!!!
One night last week Brindley, who sleeps in a bed beside Pikey, managed to get her collar caught around one end of the radiator pipe-work. This is made of thin flexible plastic. She got up to shake herself and managed to take one end of the radiator with her. The racket woke us both up and Robert found the whole radiator hanging lopsidedly off the wall. No damage but it took Brindley some time to come to terms with sleeping there again. Her collar comes off at night now!!
Over the years some of the dry-stone walls round the garden have started to show their age. We’ve been having them rebuilt by Sam (who rebuilt our garden five years ago) and Christian – great fun to have around.
