Saint George's Day 2010.
We have had an interesting week since the last post!!!
We have no got ourselves organised into a semblance of a routine mostly revolving around transfers from wheelchair to bed, bed to commode, commode to wheelchair, wheelchair to armchair and armchair to commode. Anyway we’ve got it sussed although whether a carer would get all the permutations of where to place all the different cushions is extremely doubtful.
On Monday the Brotherwood man came from Gretna to measure up Pikey’s wheelchair for the fixings in the new adapted Fiat Multipla. It’s coming next Thursday and then Pikey will be able to get out of the house. When he came we had the first amazing coincidence. Robert’s secretary while he worked in Windsor was Pat Cowdery; she was married to John who worked at Buckingham Palace and taught Prince Philip (the irascible Greek prince) to carriage-drive; they had a son Andrew who worked for Raffety Buckland under Robert and who had a swimming pool accident and became a quadraplegic; the family moved up to just north of Dumfries; while they were there John taught the Brotherwood man’s wife (who was and is severely disabled) to carriage-drive; all this came out because Andrew who despite being disabled made a name for himself as a commentator at carriage driving events across the world, sadly died earlier this month in the States. Robert happened to mention this and the coincidences came tumbling out.
On Tuesday the Acorn stair-lift name came to measure up for the new stair-lift (that’s another story altogether) and then we had the next bizarre coincidence. Before Pikey and Robert were married she knew a Royal Marine officer who had served and died in a helicopter accident in Oman. The stair-lift man turned out to be a very great friend of his and had carried his coffin at his funeral.
Doesn’t the world get smaller as you get older? Enough of coincidences …..
Today Pikey went to hospital by ambulance since she has a full length “pot” on her broken leg. The Registrar said that the “pot” as doing its job correctly and that she should be out of it in five weeks when she next goes for an appointment. She will then still be in a “pot” but just on her lower leg. So then she’ll be able to bend her knee.
The sale of the house in Dundee that Kate and Robert own has completed today….phew!

Congratulations on your crossword prize. I was beginning to wonder whether the winners were just made up every week and no prize actually existed. So what do you get? Fountain pen? Concise Oxford Dictionary?
