Richard Brown added a comment to last week’s post viz:- Can I nominate the irritating robot-woman on trains? "The next station with this train..."
I can think of others "The buffet car is now open and is next to coach HAITCH" rather than "Coach Aitch".
"The next station stop will be Rugby" as opposed to just "the next station"; is this said just to wake you up (who would want get off at Rugby, anyway?) and make it clear that Rugby is next station at which the train will stop and not the station you are whizzing through now.
Also what’s all this nonsense about "train station" what’s wrong with just "station" ? It served us well for well over a century. You don’t talk about "Victoria Train Station" do you? Although you do talk about "Victoria Coach Station" I could go on but ……..
Today is my father-in-law's birthday! Hooray!
That is him there from this past summer, doing his best Gandalf impression. The fact that he lives in the Shire (Yorkshire to be exact) and hangs out with Hobbits (OK, his grandson) adds to the whole LOTR feel in this short walk we took from his home. That’s an extract from the post dated November 3 – a blessed date in Robert’s life - on http://www.felberfrolics.blogspot.com/ (Susie’s blogsite have a peek – it’s Oh So Different! We don’t really understand Susie’s it but we do read it avidly and really try ………).
You will see a reference to my looking like Gandalf from Lord of the Rings. This is a fallacy, actually the character I resemble in the picture is Bilbo Baggins. The reference to my living in The Shire comes from the inability of ex-colonials to pronounce Yorkshire correctly – it’s "Yorkshur" not "Yorkshire" so I think I live in the The Shur!!
The Holland family connection is much deeper than this resemblance – one of Robert’s mother’s tutors at Oxford was J R R Tolkien – he was Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Pembroke College and she was reading for a degree in Ancient English. Then, when Robert went to his degree ceremony, J R R Tolkien was the recipient of an honorary degree and the Public Orator – as is his wont and duty – made a long speech in his honour in Latin. Robert laughed at all the witticisms as did all the dons present who had an English translation – bloody old ignorant farts!!
Pikey saw her haematologist and her neuro-surgeon on Monday and both are very pleased with her progress and neither want to see her for four months – WHOOPEE!
Love from Robert and Pikey
