INFURIATING PHRASE No 7
"Bored of" Pedants can get bored with or bored by pointing out this grammatical error. It’s rather like the problem of "different from" and "different to". We do know one pair of friendly pedants who are also keen blogwatchers who will wholeheartedly agree with this comment. Dare they put a comment on the blog?

Robert defines the word "pedant" as an abusive term used to describe those of us who encourage English to be spoken and written proper-like and as what the Queen speaks.

Every morning Robert, with his solitary breakfast (solitary ‘cos he takes Pikey’s up to her in bed), reads the death notices in the Daily Telegraph. Today’s edition contained the following entry

"HOPE. – Sir John Hope had breakfast on 30th October, felt tired, went to bed and didn’t wake up". What a splendid way to go!

This week we had a letter from Eric Low, the Chief Executive of Myeloma UK, which rather naturally we support. It read "We have recently been successful in overturning a negative decision by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) regarding the availability of Velcade on the NHS. Although Velcade does not provide a cure it can double the life expectancy of people with myeloma. This is only the second time that an NICE appraisal decision has ever been reversed." Thank you all who have helped us to support the campaign to reverse this perverse decision.

Pikey is really much better and is really getting back into the swing of things in a big way – for her. She still gets tired at the end of the day but today she actually felt pain free enough to do her first session of quilting for two months. So life is looking up. Robert has completely recovered and is gearing up for his arthroscopy next Friday – so the blog may well be a day early next week.

Susie and Edward have an alarming habit of dressing up poor long suffering Stan in fancy clothes but they have been outdone by this classic British example of anthropomorphic exaggeration. Canine ace takes to the pavement. Stanley, a four year old fox terrier, turns heads when he goes out for his daily walk. His owners, Phil and Sharon Cook, from Leigh, Essex, made him a replica plane for a Halloween fancy dress party. Mrs Cook said: "Stanley loves it. He is content to sit in the cockpit and watch the world go by. We decided to go for the Spitfire as a nod towards Remembrance Day" Thank you to the Daily Telegraph.

Keep smiling – love from Robert and Pikey

Slandered on the web!

While we're on dodgy prepositions, can I nominate the irritating robot-woman on trains? 'The next station with this train...' Say what?

Hope all well, and that you, and gin stocks, have recovered from Brown incursions.
