Sheila and I went to the concert at Mellerstain House on Friday evening after I had posted the blog. The music was wonderful; we heard a piece by Jan Kalliwoda of whom I had never ever heard and nor had anybody else.
On Saturday Kate and Andrew came down from Dundee to meet Sheila and we had a great time in a favourite pub which was empty except for us four as it was Kelso Races that day. So we had a good old natter.
It was the 5th November 2011 exactly 150 years to the day - bizarre - when my great great great grandfather John Kirkaldy died at Clifton Hill just outside Ednam which is the next village but one to where Sheila lives. We had found his memorial in Ednam churchyard earlier that week. The four of us found the actual house he died in!! I had never realised he was so close until Sheila took the trouble to read the History of the Kirkaldy’s which I had cobbled together in 2008.
I drove back down to Bentham in time to go down to Eva, my sister in law’s, funeral yesterday. Elinor drove me most of the way there and back and we picked Kate up from Luton Airport on the way – she had flown down from Edinburgh. The funeral was sad as it reminded me of the events of just six months ago but it was good to be there, to support Mark and his two sons and meet some relatives I had not seen for along time. All rather emotional and tiring going there and back in a day.
There was good news from the Robyn and Tony front as the latest investigations into his medical condition appear not to be as dire as they might have been. I will be seeing them at the weekend after next when I will get fuller details no doubt.
A joke to lighten us all up??!!..
An atheist was walking through the woods. 'What majestic trees! 'What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!' he said to himself. As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look and saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him.
He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing in on him. He looked over his shoulder again and the bear was even closer. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him.
At that instant the atheist cried out, 'Oh my God!' Time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. 'You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don't exist and even credit creation to a cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?’
The atheist looked directly into the light, 'It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the bear a Christian?’ 'Very well,' said the voice. The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. The bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head and spoke: 'For what I am about to receive, may the Lord make me truly thankful. Amen.'
