CHRISTMAS DAY
It's being snowing and freezing on and off all week; unfortunately before the first major (by UK standards) snow-fall it rained the evening before and then froze so the snow settled on top of a thin sheet of ice. Robert went to the garage, slipped feet first down the slight slope, fell on flat on his back and banged his head quite hard on the cobbles which were thankfully covered with 3 inches of snow. He had a fairly painful head but his brains appear to be intact - by his standards. But then if you lose your faculties you are the last person to know. Plenty of paracetamol (pinched from Pikey's drug pile) and Algipan rub have returned him to normal - so he thinks.
Last Sunday we had been invited to a drinks party on the other side of the courtyard but we decided that it was just too risky on the ice and snow not only for Pikey whose bones are liable to fracture at the slightest provocation but also for the people who had offered to help who would have been brought down due to a domino effect. The most difficult part of coping with Pikey in her wheelchair is not the sitting in it but the transfer from her wheelchair to bed, her wheelchair to bath or worst of all getting her from her wheelchair into a car.
The whole problem made us acutely aware of the problem that any accident to either of us would mean - nursing home here we come!!! Sorry to be so gloomy on Christmas Day but that's life.
The cold snap and its associated travel problems and delays reminded Robert of the true story of the smartly dressed self-important man who pushed to the front of the check-in queue at Heathrow and demanded that he be processed first, "Do you know who I am??!!" he shouted. The check-in girl looked at him and said in a loud voice to the rest of the queue "Does anyone know who this man is? - he seems to have forgotten!". Laughter and collapse of stout party!!!!
Too much Christmas pud or keeping everything crossed for another present? "Grandchildren don't make a man feel old; it's the knowledge that he's married to a grandmother" G Norman Collie (1859-1942)
