On Sunday, Robert fetched Pompey and Brindley from their holidays. Pompey's eyes looked enormous and she seemed to have great difficulty in seeing at all and was very confused. So Robert took her to the vets on Monday afternoon. They kept her in overnight to see what the problems were.
She had two detached retinas which were caused by her excessively high blood pressure. Her heart was not at all good - we always knew she had a heart murmur. She also had difficulty breathing - her breathing rate was very fast and extremely laboured. Her sight might have returned if the retinas re-attached themselves otherwise she would have remained blind. Her breathing might have recovered with medication. She had very few teeth left. All in all her prospects were for six months living blind at the most. So we had to take the inevitable decision which you always have to with pets.
Considering her life started about fifteen years ago living as a stray between one of the main roads out of Portsmouth and the main London-Portsmouth railway line until Elinor rescued her and we took her up to Rushup as a very scrawny creature, she did not have a bad life with us for nearly 14 years. Here she is sitting on the Ferrari outside our house here.
It all cast rather a gloom over the beginning of the week. But life goes on.
Pikey started her fourth, and hopefully last, Velcade cycle on Monday and all seems to be going well - touch wood. We see her specialist on Monday at Barrow so we'll know more then.
Loads of love from Robert and Pikey
