As Julius Caesar wrote at the very beginning of this Gallic Commentaries "Gallia divisa est in tria partes" And for those of you who did not do Latin at school it means "Gaul was divided into three parts".
"Patella Roberti divisa est in tria partes". The surgeon revealed that Robert had a relatively rare condition - a tripartite patella and probably two of them. It is quite common to have bipartite patellas and he was quite thrilled to see a tripartite one. Robert always knew he was a rare creation. You acquire it at birth (it doesn't break into three parts). The three parts are held together by tendons. In order to repair the knee he had to remove one part of the patella and sew the tendons back onto the bone. How he did that God only knows.

Mchael Brown, who saw the patient today, said Robert had got the quotation wrong, but on checking the Ox. Dic. of Quot's. he was wrong too!!! The quotation should be ... "Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres".
I took Latin and yet can add nothing to the debate...
