INFURIATING PHRASE No 4
"As time progressed". Time doesn’t progress, it passes.
Pikey is progressing (note correct use of this verb) well and has been into Bentham twice this week without too much discomfort which is more than she could do last week. She has also driven her Ferrari to the end of the drive. She also coped with the shower totally on her own for the first time this morning – not the easiest of manoeuvres at the best of times with steps up and down and a slippery floor. So we are hoping for more improvements in the weeks to come. She has got to be able to look after Robert for the days after his operation at the beginning of November!!
We have included three examples of the way the world is governed today – all ridiculous in their own way.
The first one Mike and Anne Brown asked us to insert in our blog - Richard Brown supplied us with the link to the picture. The following was under the section 'A Bad Week for…..' in last Sunday’s Observer:
'Dignity: It emerged that the Lord Mayor of Belfast tried to leapfrog a council worker dressed as a tomato - stay with us - to promote a local food festival. Unfortunately he landed on her head. And now the tomato-cum-council worker has been off work for a month with a slipped disc. Why can't public notables just shake hands and rattle their chains in the conventional fashion?'

The second one is from the Daily Telegraph - if you think that it’s only the governing party in the UK who spin, get this quote from Doc Mtusi a senior official in Zimbabwe’s Finance Ministry when he was interviewed by the Cape Times.
"The unpatriotic hoarding of food gives the impression that we have a problem, when clearly we haven’t. We do not call it starving, we call it fasting. Fasting is good for you. Lots of famous people have fasted for the benefit of their people, Gandhi, for instance. In our case, the people will be encouraged to fast thereby strengthening themselves against the onslaught of colonial imperialism. We have no objection in principle to people eating. Those of us in Government all eat, but only because persons in our important positions have to. What we must guard against is the belief that people have the right to break the law because they’re hungry."

The third one was emailed to Robert by a fellow First Responder.
The world-famous Red Arrows have been banned from appearing at the 2012 London Olympics because they are deemed "too British". Organisers of the event say that the Arrows military background might be "offensive" to other countries taking part in the Games. The display team have performed at more than 4,000 events worldwide, but the Department of Culture, Media and Sport have deemed the display team "too militaristically British". Red Arrows pilots were said to be "outraged", as they had hoped to put on a truly world class display for the Games, something which had never been seen before. Being axed from a British-based event for being "too British" is an insult - the Arrows are a symbol of Britain . The Red Arrows have been excellent ambassadors for British overseas trade, as they display their British-built Hawk aircraft all over the world. The Arrows performed a short flypast in 2005 when the winning bid was announced, but their flypast at the Games was to have been truly spectacular. It is to be hoped that common sense will prevail. Oh well, the world might possibly recover from all these absurdities.
Keep smiling – love from Robert and Pikey
